Respect the Range - by Standing with Giants

The White Horse at Westbury dominates the chalk downland with an intensity that catches you off guard. This isn't some delicate line drawing - it's a proper statement, 374 feet of brilliant white carved into the hillside, and the scale of it only hits when you're standing in front of it.

The horse itself dates back centuries, though the current version was restored in 1873, which explains why it looks so sharp. Walking up to the base takes a good twenty minutes from the car park, and the chalk is slippery underfoot when wet, so proper shoes matter. The payoff is genuine though - standing at the edge and looking back across the Westbury plateau, you get proper views that stretch across Wiltshire toward Frome.

This works well for walkers and anyone with a camera. Kids will find the trudge up fairly tedious unless they're already keen on countryside walks, and the site itself is just a hill - there's no visitor centre or tea shop. Go early to dodge other visitors, and frankly, a clear morning is essential because the whole point rather disappears in mist.
