Reservoir Number 3

The walk up to Reservoir Number 3 rewards you properly. Water stretches out between the Argyll hills, calm and reflective on a decent day, with the kind of views that make you forget Helensburgh is only a few miles south. It's not dramatic - there's no crashing waterfalls or rare wildlife theatre - but that's rather the point. You get peace, space, and somewhere genuinely quiet to sit with a coffee.

This is walker territory. The approach isn't rough, but it's not a stroll either, so bring decent boots and expect forty minutes or so depending on fitness. Families with younger kids might find the slog a bit much for the payoff, though determined teenagers will manage fine. History buffs won't find much to grab onto here - it's purely about the landscape and the walk itself.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. Bring water, check the weather, and don't rely on phone signal. Access appears to be free and open year-round, though paths can get boggy after rain. Spring and early autumn are best - midwinter gets grey and grim, and high summer brings the midges.

If you're based at Rosneath Castle Caravan Park or Hunters Quay Holiday Village, this makes a genuine day's outing rather than a quick potter. Pair it with a walk around Loch Lomond on another day and you've got proper hill country on your doorstep. Worth the effort if you came for walking. Skip it if you wanted easy.
