Reese Richard

The church sits in Highland proper, a quiet corner of the Scottish Highlands that doesn't announce itself loudly. Reese Richard is one of those modest stone buildings you'd walk past if you weren't looking, but worth a proper stop if you're in the area around Tain. Inside, it's all whitewashed walls and simple lines - the kind of place that feels honest rather than showy. There's genuine peace in that restraint.

It works best for people who like their history understated. Not the ornate cathedral type - this is what a working parish church looks like, stripped of unnecessary flourish. If you're walking the Highland trails or passing through on the way to somewhere else, ten minutes here costs you nothing and gives you a real sense of how communities actually worshipped. Historians will appreciate the fabric. Families with restless kids might find it a bit austere after five minutes.

Tain's close by if you need supplies or a coffee. The two caravan parks - Dornoch Firth and Dornoch Camping - are within reasonable distance if you're basing yourself in the area for a week. Neither is an attraction in itself, mind, but they're decent enough for a Highland break where you're building your own itinerary rather than ticking boxes.

Go in daylight. The light through those simple windows changes throughout the day, and that's really the show here. No admission fee as far as anyone knows. Best visited as part of a broader Highland walk rather than as a destination in itself.
