Two lakes side by side near Sawbridgeworth, Redricks offers proper water views without the pretension of somewhere fancier. You get a decent walk around the perimeter - takes about 45 minutes at a normal pace - with benches dotted around if you fancy just sitting and watching the water. The lakes are peaceful, genuinely so. Ducks, geese, the occasional heron if you're lucky and quiet enough.

This works brilliantly as a half-day add-on to a caravan park stay. The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake sits right there at the water's edge, which is convenient if you're based there - you can roll out of your pitch straight onto the walking paths. Toad Abode is a short drive away too, so it's well-positioned for anyone doing the Hertfordshire lakes circuit.

Best for walkers who like something gentle rather challenging, and families after a bit of fresh air without the crowds. Kids won't be glued to your knees the entire time - there's enough to spot and explore. It's free to wander, no entrance fee, so you can pop over for an hour or make it part of a longer ramble if you're mixing visits to Lee Valley or other nearby spots.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. Weekends bring the dog walkers and joggers out in force, which rather defeats the point of coming somewhere this quiet.
