Redgrave and Lopham Fen

The moment you arrive at Redgrave and Lopham Fen, you realise you've stepped into something properly special - a vast wetland reserve that feels genuinely remote despite being just outside Norwich. This is one of East Anglia's most important nature reserves, and it shows. Raised boardwalks wind through reedbeds and open water, letting you move quietly through the landscape without disturbing the wildlife.

What makes it work so well is the sheer scale. You're walking through reed-fringed channels and open pools where bitterns, marsh harriers, and various herons make their appearance - especially during migration seasons when things get genuinely busy. Spring and autumn are peak times if you want to see the most birds. The boardwalks are well-maintained, though they can get slippery after rain, so grip matters.

It's excellent for patient birdwatchers and family groups who don't mind a slower pace. Young kids sometimes find it hard to stay quiet long enough to spot anything interesting, but older children with a genuine interest in wildlife will be absorbed for hours. Allow two to three hours for a proper walk - rushing it defeats the purpose entirely.
