Redesmere

The water here is proper clear - unusual for a Cheshire lake, and it's what makes Redesmere worth the drive from Macclesfield. You're looking at a glacial mere, basically a chunk of landscape carved out by ice age activity, and it still feels ancient even on a sunny afternoon when families are dotting the banks with picnics.

It's a walker's lake rather than a thrill-seeker's destination. The footpath loops round reasonably well, taking maybe an hour at an easy pace, and the bird life is genuinely good - bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Anglers take it seriously here, so you'll spot them stationed at favourite spots, patient and still. The southern shore feels quieter than the access point near the car park, which gets busy with school runs and dog walkers come late afternoon.

Kids will manage fine for an hour or so before asking what's next - it's not a destination that screams entertainment. What it does offer is a proper break from traffic noise and a chance to actually see water that looks inviting. Swimming isn't permitted, which seems a shame on hot days.

Staying at Sycamore Farm Caravan Site, just three miles away, puts you perfectly positioned for a morning here before exploring the wider Cheshire countryside. The lake works best as part of a longer walk rather than a standalone trip, unless you're genuinely keen on watching the light shift across water for a couple of hours. Free to visit, naturally.
