Redding Hill

The walk up Redding Hill is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across the Wharfe Valley justify the climb. You're looking at moorland proper - rough grass, gritstone outcrops, the kind of Yorkshire landscape that makes you understand why people come back here year after year.

It's not a massive undertaking. Most walkers will manage the ascent in under an hour from Ilkley, which sits just below. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic cairn or trig point drama - but you get proper 360-degree views that stretch well beyond the immediate valley. On a hazy day, though, you might wonder what all the fuss is about.

This is walkers' territory rather than sightseers' territory. Families with young children might find it a bit of a slog for limited reward, but serious ramblers will appreciate the moorland feel and the way it connects into the broader Ilkley Moor network. It works brilliantly as part of a longer walk rather than a destination in itself.

The area around Ilkley has a decent cluster of camping and glamping options - Windmill Retreats and Breaks Fold Farm both sit within four miles, making this a sensible addition to a wider park holiday in North Yorkshire. Spring and autumn are probably your best bets weather-wise, though locals will tell you the view changes entirely depending on the light and season. Free to access, obviously. Just allow a half-day if you're combining it with other moorland walking.
