Red River Stream Works

The industrial heritage of Cornwall's mining boom sits quietly along Red River Stream Works, just outside Redruth. What remains are the physical scars of 19th-century tin and copper extraction - a series of leats (water channels), old workings, and the landscape itself reshaped by miners' pickaxes and water power. You won't find a visitor centre or gift shop here. Instead, you get something more honest: the actual terrain where men once laboured in brutal conditions to pull wealth from the earth.

This is genuinely worthwhile if you're into industrial archaeology or Cornish history. Kids under ten will likely lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're the type to scramble about rocks and follow streams. A decent pair of walking boots matters - it's not a manicured trail. Allow an hour for a proper explore, longer if you're photographing or taking notes.

The site costs nothing to access, which is refreshing. Visit midweek in autumn when Redruth's visitor traffic drops and you'll have the place practically to yourself. Summer weekends can feel a bit busier, though 'busy' for a historic stream works still means fewer than a dozen people.
