Red River Nature Walk

The Red River cuts through Derbyshire with a proper intensity - this isn't some babbling brook, but a river that actually looks like it means business. The nature walk follows the water's edge through woodland that feels genuinely wild for the East Midlands, with the red-stained banks giving the whole place its distinctive character. You'll spot plenty of waterfowl if you're patient, and the path winds past some lovely stretches where the trees overhang the water.

It's the sort of walk that keeps your attention without demanding anything extreme. Most sections are manageable underfoot, though after heavy rain you'll definitely feel it. Walkers and keen naturalists get the most from it - families with young kids might find the novelty wears off after forty minutes or so, unless yours are the type who'll hunt for interesting stones and leaves the whole way. It's free to access, and you can knock out a decent two-hour loop without breaking a sweat.

The real appeal is that it feels removed from anywhere, despite being just outside Alfreton. If you're based at Golden Valley or The Firs - both genuinely good parks - this makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. Don't expect dramatic scenery or Instagram moments, but if you want a proper bit of Derbyshire woodland without the crowds you'd fight at somewhere like Monsal Trail, it delivers. The red water is genuinely striking after rain.
