Red Fox Brewery

Red Fox Brewery sits just outside Colchester, in the heart of Essex beer country. This is a proper working brewery where you can actually watch the process - the hiss of steam, the smell of hops, the whole thing. They do tours if you book ahead, and you'll end up in their tap room with a fresh pint in hand. The beer's solid, nothing fancy, just well-made local brews that taste better when you know exactly where they've come from.

It's ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Teybrook Orchard is barely a mile away, which makes for an easy afternoon outing. History buffs might appreciate the brewing heritage angle, but honestly, the main draw is the beer and the people who make it. A couple of hours is plenty; you're not going to spend all day there unless you're intent on trying every cask they've got on.

Go on a weekend if you can. The place has a bit more energy to it then, and there's usually food on, or at least someone's brought something edible. Summer's the natural time for it, but a winter visit has its charm too - warm room, strong ale, Colchester just down the road if you fancy a proper walk around the town afterwards. Not life-changing, but if you're a beer person staying in the area, you'd be daft to miss it.
