Reculver Visitor Centre

The twin towers of Reculver stick up from the Kent coast like defiant fingers. What you're actually looking at are the remains of a 12th-century church, abandoned to the sea and now managed as a visitor centre that tells the story of this dramatic stretch of shoreline. The site sits on a headland near Herne Bay, and the visitor facilities help explain what made this spot so strategically important - from Roman forts to medieval monasteries to the modern coastal erosion battles still happening today.

You can walk around the ruins themselves, which takes a good hour if you're reading the interpretation boards properly. The towers are the real draw - they're substantial enough to give you a genuine sense of scale, and on a clear day the views across the Thames estuary are genuinely worth the trip. It's not a scramble or a difficult walk, which means families with younger kids can manage it without complaint.

The visitor centre building itself is fairly modest - don't expect a glossy museum experience. It's more functional than fancy, but it does a solid job of contextualising what you're seeing. Free admission, which is refreshing. Allow two to three hours if you want to absorb the history without rushing.

If you're based at Birchington Vale Holiday Park nearby, this is an obvious half-day outing. It works well combined with a coastal walk towards Herne Bay or a day exploring Canterbury's cathedral quarter a short drive inland. Winter's actually the best time - fewer tourists and the light on those towers is rather special.
