Reculver Beach

The twin towers of Reculver Church rise from the shingle like a pair of stone sentries keeping watch over the Kent coast. What draws you here, though, isn't just the ruins - it's the vast sweep of beach, the sense that you're standing at a proper threshold between land and sea.

Reculver sits between Herne Bay and Whitstable, and the beach itself is the main event. The pebbles stretch for miles, backed by those distinctive Norman towers that date from the 12th century. The church was demolished in the 1800s but the towers were kept as a navigation aid for ships - they've become the visual landmark for the entire stretch of coast. You can walk right up to them, scramble around the ruins, and get a feel for what's been lost and what's endured.

History enthusiasts will spend time reading the plaques and understanding the site's significance. Families with kids will find the beach exploration rewarding - there's plenty of space to roam, rock pools to investigate if the tide's right, and the towers make a good focal point for photos. The walk is easy enough for most ages, though the shingle can be tiring on the legs.

The nearest town is Canterbury, about 20 minutes inland, and if you're staying at Dog & Duck Leisure Park just down the road, Reculver makes a straightforward afternoon outing. Come at low tide for the best beach access. Wind can be fierce here, so dress accordingly.
