Rebellion Knoll

You won't find Rebellion Knoll marked on many tourist maps, which is precisely why it's worth the effort from Hope Valley. This modest peak sits in the High Peak landscape where moorland rolls out in every direction, and on a clear day you can trace the spine of the Dark Peak from up here.

The walk itself isn't brutal - most people manage it in under two hours from the valley floor - but it's proper moorland terrain. Bog in places, particularly after rain. The views are the thing though: wide, honest countryside with stone walls threading through pasture below. No cafe, no visitor centre, no crowds.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey on the descent. There's no historical site or dramatic rock formation to break up the moorland walk, so you're really here for the exercise and the perspective. History buffs would be better served heading to Peveril Castle near Castleton instead.

Being so close to Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - just over two miles away - makes this a natural fit for a peak-bagging park holiday. The site itself gets solid reviews. If you're after a quieter base, Dale Farm Rural Campsite runs adult-only pitches five and a half miles south.

Go early if you can. The light's better, the moor feels less crowded, and you'll have the afternoon free to explore Hope Valley itself. Free to access, naturally.
