Ray Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Ray Wood sits just outside Shipston-on-Stour and delivers exactly what you'd want from an Oxfordshire forest - mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually breathe. There's no visitor centre or café, which some will see as a downside and others as the whole point.

You're looking at a straightforward ramble through mixed woodland, the sort of place where you genuinely might spot deer if you're quiet enough early on. The paths are well-maintained but not so polished they've lost character. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for a decent loop, depending on how much you dawdle and photograph moss.

Historically minded types will appreciate this is working woodland with real forestry heritage, though don't expect interpretive boards spelling it all out. It's more about feeling the place than learning from plaques. Families with primary-aged kids will find it manageable, though there's not much to actually do once you've walked it - no playground, no water features. That said, it's brilliant for tiring out restless legs before a long car journey.

Campers at Shire Camping or Crofts Barn Campsite are ideally positioned for this. Free access as far as I can tell, though it's worth checking locally as woodland regulations can shift. Spring's magic here when bluebells carpet the floor, but honestly it's decent year-round. Best visited on a weekday when it stays properly quiet.
