Ravenscroft

The walk into Ravenscroft cuts through proper woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. This nature reserve near Much Wenlock is a straightforward affair: woodland trails, open grassland, and the sort of birdsong that makes you remember why you left the city. There's nothing fancy about it, which is exactly the point.

You're looking at a couple of hours maximum if you do the full loop, less if you're just after a quick wander. The paths are manageable, though they can get boggy after rain - it's not a pushchair-friendly spot. Serious birders will find it worthwhile, particularly during spring migration. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of mud will have a decent time. If your lot expects a visitor centre and a gift shop, keep walking.

The real appeal here is that it feels genuinely undeveloped. No car parks with fifteen coaches, no themed attractions. Just trees, grass, and whatever wildlife shows up on the day. Whether it's worth a dedicated trip depends entirely on what you're after. As part of a broader Shropshire holiday based at one of the nearby parks - Lower Hill Campsite or Mill Farm Holiday Park are both solid options - it works perfectly. Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp sits a mile or so further out and pairs well with evening wildlife watching.

Go when the weather's decent. Winter's bleak here, and summer midges can be fierce. Autumn is genuinely lovely.
