Raven Rock

The walk up Raven Rock from Strathpeffer is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth the effort. You're climbing a proper hill with actual views at the end - not one of those "peaks" that turns out to be a gentle incline with a cairn on top.

Once you reach the summit, you get expansive views across the Black Isle and towards the Moray Firth. The rock itself is dramatic enough to make the huff and puff worthwhile. On a clear day, the vista justifies every aching leg muscle. In poor visibility, it's less rewarding, so timing matters.

This is walker territory. Families with younger children might find the gradient testing - plan on a good hour and a half up and down. Older kids and teenagers who can manage their legs will find it genuinely satisfying. It's the kind of walk that feels like a proper achievement rather than a casual stroll.

The nearest town is Strathpeffer itself, which sits right at the base. Go early to dodge school groups. Autumn and spring offer the clearest skies. And wear proper boots - it gets boggy higher up.
