Raven Crag

You'll find Raven Crag rising sharply above the landscape near Millom, a proper fell walk rather than a casual stroll. It's the sort of summit that rewards effort without demanding full mountain experience - steep in places, but nothing technically tricky if you're reasonably fit and have decent boots on.

The climb takes about an hour or so depending on your pace and which route you fancy. What makes it worth the walk is the view down towards the coast and across to the Lake District hills. On a clear day you can see proper distance from up there. The fell itself is open moorland with rocky outcrops - nothing fancy in terms of scenery, but it's got that raw Cumbrian feel to it.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for dawdlers or people after Instagram moments - it's a proper leg-stretch. Families with older kids who don't mind a slog will manage fine, but small children will find it tiresome. There's no café at the top or facilities to speak of, so bring what you need from the start.

If you're based at Harbour Lights Campsite near Millom, Raven Crag makes an excellent half-day out. Park near the start of the fell (follow local signs), give yourself two to three hours there and back, and you'll have walked something genuinely worthwhile without overdoing it. Free to access, obviously - it's just fell land. Pick a dry day if you can. Wet moorland is proper muddy.
