Ranworth Dam

The dam itself is modest - a low concrete structure holding back Ranworth Broad, one of Norfolk's quieter inland lakes. It's the walk that matters here, not the engineering. The path alongside the water gives proper views across the broad, especially lovely in early morning when mist still hangs low and you might spot herons working the shallows.

This is walkers' territory. The route from Great Yarmouth takes you through the Norfolk Broads' quieter corners, where the landscape opens up and you forget you're not far from the coast. Allow a couple of hours for a circuit walk, less if you just want to cross the dam and turn back. It's free, naturally - just park sensibly and go. Spring through autumn works best; winter can be waterlogged and bleak.

Families with young kids might find the walk a touch dull unless they're keen on bird spotting or water. Older children and serious walkers get more from it. The nearby caravan sites - Norfolk Broads Country Park and Clippesby Hall are both within reach - make it a useful half-day or morning activity during a park-based holiday. It connects well with the broader Broads network if you're doing multiple walks.

Don't expect drama or facilities. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards. What you get is space, water, and the chance to move without crowds. For Norfolk Broads regulars, it's a proper spot. For casual day-trippers, it's pleasant enough but not essential.
