Randal Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire sounds grander than it actually delivers, but that's rather the point. At 423 metres, Randal Hill is barely a bump by proper mountain standards, yet climbing it counts as something of a local achievement in a county famed for flatness.

You'll find it south of Grantham, and the walk up takes maybe twenty minutes depending on fitness. The summit itself is modest - no dramatic views, no clifftop drama, just open countryside rolling away in all directions with pleasant farmland vistas. On a clear day you can see across the Lincolnshire Wolds. It's the sort of place where the achievement matters more than the destination, which suits walkers perfectly.

Families get something manageable here; kids can claim "mountain bagging" without facing an actual slog. The journey's more satisfying than the summit itself, truth be told. Bring a decent map because signposting is sparse, and the approach paths wind through quiet rural terrain.

There's no facilities at the summit - no café, no visitor centre, just you and the horizon. Free, naturally. You'll want an hour minimum to make a proper day of it with a gentle stroll back.
