RAF Sawbridgeworth Memorial

There's a small memorial in Sawbridgeworth that marks where an RAF airfield once stood during the Second World War. It's not a grand affair - you won't find restored hangars or a visitor centre here - but that's rather the point. What remains is a quiet place to pause and remember the men who flew from this spot.

The memorial itself is modest, sitting among the fields east of town. Walking out to it, you get a proper sense of what the landscape was like when Sawbridgeworth served as an active station. The openness is striking. You can stand there and imagine the runways, the roar of Spitfires and Hurricanes scrambling into the sky.
