RAF Errol Memorial

The airfield at Errol doesn't look like much now - just flat Fife farmland with a modest memorial marking where RAF Errol once stood during the Second World War. But that's precisely why it matters. This was a working fighter station, home to Spitfires and Hurricanes, and the memorial honours those who flew from here and never came back.

You won't spend hours here. The site itself is straightforward - a small dedication in what's now open countryside between Perth and the coast. What you get is atmosphere and a moment to think about what happened on this unremarkable patch of ground. History types will find it moving; kids might find it a bit abstract without the buildings still standing. Bring flowers if you're visiting around significant dates.

The real value is as a stop-off during a Fife break rather than a destination in itself. You're only about four miles from Perth, so it slots easily into a day's driving. If you're based at Snugs at Logie Farm - a solid five-star spot just three miles away - you could combine it with the town's museums and galleries without much faffing about. The South Valleyfield site is closer still, though it's members-only caravanning.

No fees, no opening hours to worry about - just park up and pay respects. Ten minutes minimum, longer if you want to sit quiet for a bit. On a grey Scottish afternoon, which frankly is most afternoons, it feels properly solemn.
