Queenswood Arboretum

Two hundred acres of woodland just outside Hereford, planted up with everything from Japanese maples to native British oaks. Queenswood is the sort of place you stumble into expecting a quick look and end up spending half the day there instead.

The arboretum works brilliantly as a walking destination - there are proper trails threading through the trees, nothing too demanding, and you're constantly coming across new species with little information boards. Spring's exceptional if you can time it right, all the flowering trees in bloom at once. Autumn's equally good, mind you, when the Japanese section turns the whole place into a postcard.

Families with younger children get decent value here. There's space to run around, shade in summer, and the variety keeps things interesting longer than a straight park walk might. Older kids and serious plant enthusiasts will absolutely lose themselves exploring the different sections. The woodland floor itself is lovely - proper forest floor, lots of interesting undergrowth.

If you're based at Kingfisher Meadow or The Shires Park nearby, this is exactly the sort of afternoon activity that breaks up a quieter holiday nicely. It won't consume your entire day, but two or three hours is easily justified. The nearest town is Hereford itself, so you can add lunch in town before or after without much bother. Admission's reasonable and it's free to walk most areas, though do check current details before you head out.
