Queen Elizabeth Country Park Visitor Centre

The visitor centre at Queen Elizabeth Country Park sits at the gateway to 1,400 acres of Hampshire downland - proper rolling countryside that feels miles away from anywhere, yet it's just outside Petersfield. Inside, you'll find the usual maps and leaflets, but the real action happens once you've stepped back outside.

This is walker territory, full stop. The park has enough trails to keep you occupied for a whole day if you're keen, ranging from gentle riverside meanders to proper climbs up to the ridge with views across the South Downs. The terrain is a mix of chalk grassland and woodland, which means it changes character constantly as you move through it. Families with younger kids won't struggle on the easier loops, though the steeper sections will test anyone not used to hill walking.

You can spend anywhere from ninety minutes to a full afternoon here depending on your energy levels. The visitor centre itself won't hold your attention long - it's functional rather than fancy - but the walking is the draw. Come early on weekends if you can; the car park fills up by mid-morning in good weather.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Cedar Valley or Glamping at Wallops Wood are both within easy reach - this makes an excellent day out.
