Queen Elizabeth Country Park

The South Downs roll on for miles from Queen Elizabeth Country Park, and on a clear day you can genuinely see why people walk here. It's a proper working nature reserve just outside Petersfield - 1,400 acres of chalk grassland, woodland, and open downland that feels genuinely wild even when it's busy.

What you actually get is miles of walking and cycling trails ranging from gentle riverside paths to steep climbs that'll have you breathing hard. The views from the top are worth every step. There's a visitor centre with facilities, though it's not some big heritage attraction - this is about landscape and fresh air, not interpretation boards and gift shops.

It's ideal for serious walkers and anyone wanting proper countryside without the crowds you'd get at more famous South Downs spots. Families with young kids might find an hour or two enough before legs start complaining. Cycling is popular here, and the trails vary enough that you're not just grinding the same loop repeatedly.

Free to enter and park, which is refreshing. Allow at least two hours if you're actually walking, longer if you're exploring properly. Summer weekends get busy, so go midweek if possible.

With Cedar Valley, Glamping at Wallops Wood, and Adhurst Yurts all within five miles, this works perfectly as part of a longer South Downs stay. You can base yourself at any of these and spend days walking different sections without repeating yourself. It's genuine countryside rather than manicured parkland - rough in places, muddy in winter, and all the better for it.
