Pwll Lagoon Local Nature Reserve

The lagoon itself is surprisingly serene - a shallow body of brackish water ringed by reed beds and scrubland that feels properly remote despite being minutes from Burry Port. It's a working nature reserve, the kind of place where you're genuinely likely to spot something interesting rather than just walk round feeling cheated.

Waders love it here. Lapwings, redshanks, and curlews turn up depending on the season, and there's a decent chance of spotting a marsh harrier if you're patient. The walking is gentle - muddy paths weave through the reserve with good views across the water. You won't need more than ninety minutes unless you're serious about birdwatching, in which case bring binoculars and settle in for the morning.

It's free to access and there's no visitor centre to queue through, which is refreshing. The nearest car parking is a bit of a walk from the best vantage points, mind you, so wear decent boots. Winter and spring are peak season for birds, though summer brings dragonflies if that's your thing.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Pembrey Country Park is your closest option at under four miles away - this makes a proper half-day add-on rather than a standalone trip. Pair it with Pembrey's own woodland walks and beach access and you've got enough to fill a day without setting foot in a gift shop. It's not Instagram material, but it's the real thing.
