Punchbowl Coppice

Punchbowl Coppice is a proper woodland walk just outside Dorchester, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working coppice forest - meaning the trees get regularly harvested and regrow - which gives it a different character to your typical untouched woodland. The ground's relatively flat and easy underfoot, threading through mixed broadleaves with shafts of light cutting through the canopy depending on the season.

For walkers, it's a solid hour's circuit without feeling rushed, though you can dawdle longer if you're after bird spotting or just need a break from the caravan site. It won't blow your mind with dramatic vistas or ancient monuments - this is understated Dorset woodland, not cathedral-like forest. Kids won't get restless if they're the outdoorsy type, though there's nothing here to specifically grab their attention, so don't expect them to be thrilled.

The beauty of Punchbowl Coppice is its proximity to Dorchester town centre and the clutch of nearby holiday parks - Litton Lakes, Bagwell Farm and the others are all within a few miles. It's exactly the sort of escape you want when you're base camping. Free to walk as far as I know, and you can rock up any time. Spring and early summer work best when the woodland floor's alive with growth, though autumn's decent too if you don't mind the mud.

Worth the detour? If you're staying at one of the nearby parks and fancy a morning woodland shuffle before heading into town, absolutely. On its own merits though, it's pleasant rather than unmissable.
