Pulfin Bog Nature Reserve

Pulfin Bog is one of those places that rewards the curious more than the casual stroller. It's a nature reserve tucked away near Beverley in East Yorkshire - proper wetland terrain rather than the rolling countryside you might expect in this corner of Yorkshire. The bog itself is the draw: spongy underfoot, rich with sphagnum moss and the sort of plant life that thrives in acidic, waterlogged conditions.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get the most from it. This isn't a manicured park with viewing platforms and signage at every turn - you're out in actual habitat here, which means waterproof boots are non-negotiable and timing matters. Visit in spring or early summer when the bog plants are at their most interesting, or in winter if you're keen on seeing visiting birds.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, and the paths can be boggy (the clue's in the name). Not ideal for young children or anyone after an easy stroll, but for birdwatchers or plant nerds, it's genuinely absorbing. There's no entrance fee as far as I can tell - it's a proper nature reserve, free to explore.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Kingfisher Lakes or Dacre Lakeside are closest at around 4-5 miles - this makes for a worthwhile half-day excursion. Pair it with a visit to Beverley itself for lunch or a poke around the town centre, and you've got a solid day sorted.
