Public Footpath Windrush Path

The Windrush Path is a proper walking route that threads through some of the Cotswolds' most appealing countryside, following the river of the same name as it meanders towards Bourton-on-the-Water. It's not a single destination so much as a journey - you pick your section and go, with the water company's footpath markers keeping you honest when the route gets ambiguous.

What makes it work is the simplicity. You're walking alongside actual countryside: meadows, trees, the gentle burble of the river itself. No grand views, no Instagram moments - just solid, honest walking. The path threads through villages and past farms, so you catch proper glimpses of how people actually live out here rather than just seeing the postcard version.

Walkers will absolutely get this. Families with younger kids might do better sticking to a mile or so, as the path can be muddy after rain and there's not much in the way of facilities mid-route. History types will appreciate that you're walking old trade routes, though don't expect plaques telling you what happened where.

The route works brilliantly as part of a wider Cotswolds ramble from either Cotswolds Meadow Glamping or the larger Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - both within spitting distance. Allow a couple of hours for a decent stretch. Spring and early autumn are best; summer can get a bit muggy down in the river valley, and winter mudsliness is real.
