Prospect Street Park

A strip of woodland and grassland that runs through Horncastle itself, Prospect Street Park is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss entirely. It's modest - no grand gates or visitor centre - but it does the job well enough if you're after a proper walk without having to drive miles from your accommodation.

The park follows the old railway line and gives you a genuine bit of green space right on the edge of town. You'll find yourself walking through trees, past open meadow, with glimpses of the surrounding countryside. It's popular with dog walkers and anyone wanting to stretch their legs, and children won't get bored for a solid 45 minutes or so, especially if they like spotting birds or hunting for insects among the undergrowth.

There's no facilities to speak of - no café, no playgrounds, no visitor information boards - so come prepared. It's free and open whenever, which means you can fit it in around other plans. The walk itself is fairly flat and manageable for families with younger kids, though nothing about it will take your breath away.

If you're staying at Three Horseshoes Campsite or Oxcombe Campsite just outside town, this is a sensible option for a morning outing before heading to one of Lincolnshire's grander attractions. It's the kind of place that rounds out a holiday rather than being a main event, but that's precisely why it works.
