Priory Water

A shallow lake just outside Melton Mowbray that's genuinely worth a stop if you're camping or caravanning in the area. Priory Water is the sort of place where you can actually get a decent walk in without it feeling like a slog - the water itself draws birdwatchers and anglers, though it's hardly dramatic. The surrounding paths are decent enough, and on a clear day it's properly peaceful. There's something about Leicestershire lakes that feels understated compared to the Lake District - no crowds, no gift shops, just water and sky.

If you're staying at The Grange or Frisby Lakes nearby, it's an easy afternoon venture. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - cormorants and herons do turn up. The walk loops around in about 45 minutes if you're not dawdling, though you can easily stretch it to an hour. Families with small kids won't be overstimulated - it's low-key, which is either exactly what you need after a morning on the road or not exciting enough if you've got restless teenagers.

Free to access, no facilities that I could find on site, so pack a flask if you're planning to sit and watch. It works best as part of a broader Leicestershire exploration - pair it with Eye Kettleby Lakes just down the road if you want more of the same, or head into Melton itself for proper food. Genuinely useful for a park-based holiday if you want a proper walk that doesn't require a car journey.
