Prior's Grove

You'll find Prior's Grove just outside Gloucester, a proper woodland walk that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. It's a small forest patch with decent footpaths winding through mature trees - the sort of place locals pop into for a quick leg-stretch rather than an all-day expedition.

The main appeal is straightforward: shade, birdsong, and breathing space from the city. Trees are genuinely old in places, and there's something calming about the density of it all. You're not scrambling over rocks or hunting for rare orchids. It's just woods. A forty-minute wander is plenty unless you're the type who likes sitting on logs for ages.

Walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds and the easy access from Gloucester itself. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's no playground, cafe, or obvious destination point to aim for. That said, it's cracking for burning off energy if you're camping at Millavon Holiday Park or the Tewkesbury Abbey site nearby. Both are within five or six miles, making Prior's Grove a handy diversion for an afternoon.

Go when it's not raining - muddy paths here aren't terrible but they're not fun either. Summer mornings are best, quieter and proper lovely in the dappled light. Admission appears to be free, which at least removes the decision-making paralysis. It's a solid twenty minutes from Gloucester town centre, so factor in travel time. Worth the detour if you're basing yourself at one of the local parks and need a straightforward woodland ramble.
