Catgrove Wood

The woodland floor at Catgrove Wood is carpeted with ferns and moss that squelch satisfyingly underfoot after rain. It's a proper Gloucestershire forest - the kind where you'll actually see bluebells in spring and where the canopy gets thick enough that afternoon light turns greenish. About 4.5 miles from Gloucester, it's convenient without feeling too managed or visitor-centred.

Walkers will find genuine peace here rather than crowded loops and interpretation boards. The trees are mixed deciduous woodland, which means something's always changing with the seasons. You can ramble for an hour or three depending on how lost you fancy getting. Families with young kids who are confident on uneven ground will do well, though it's not a manicured stroll - tree roots and the odd boggy patch come as standard.

The thing is, this isn't a destination in itself. It works brilliantly as a morning detour if you're based at Pelerine Caravan & Camping Site nearby, or if you're exploring the broader Gloucestershire parks circuit. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no facilities to speak of. You turn up, park somewhere sensible, and walk. That's rather the point.

Bring decent boots. Go midweek if you can. The light's best in late afternoon, when the gloom between the trees feels properly atmospheric rather than just dark.
