Priddy Nine Barrows

Standing on the windswept Mendip Hills, nine Bronze Age burial mounds line up like ancient sentries watching over the Somerset countryside. These barrows, dating back some 4,000 years, form one of Britain's most impressive prehistoric cemeteries - though don't expect anything flashy. What you'll find are grassy humps scattered across rough moorland, each marking where Bronze Age chieftains were laid to rest with their treasures.

History buffs will love the atmospheric setting and the chance to walk among genuine ancient monuments. The views across to Wells and the Somerset Levels are properly spectacular on a clear day, making the trek worthwhile even if archaeology isn't your thing. Families with older children who don't mind a good walk will enjoy it, though toddlers might find the uneven terrain tricky.

Getting there requires a decent walk across Priddy village green and onto the moor - allow at least an hour for the round trip. The barrows are freely accessible year-round, though sturdy boots are essential as the ground can be boggy.
