Priddy Green Sink

What looks like an innocent patch of ground on Priddy village green conceals one of Somerset's more dramatic geological features. This natural sinkhole drops straight down into the limestone beneath - a proper cave entrance that'll have geology enthusiasts peering over the edge with genuine excitement.

The sink isn't your typical tourist cave with guided tours and gift shops. It's wild, unlit, and absolutely not suitable for casual exploration without proper caving kit and experience. What makes it special is the sheer vertical drop and the way it demonstrates how water has carved through the Mendip Hills over millennia.

Walkers following the Mendip Way will pass right by it, and it's worth the brief detour from Wells to see how the landscape literally opens up beneath your feet. Kids will be fascinated by the concept, though keep them well back from the edge.

Free to view from the surface, though there's precious little else here beyond the geological spectacle itself. Allow fifteen minutes unless you're planning serious underground exploration. The location near Wells makes it an easy addition to a Mendips tour, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Cheddar Camping or Wells Touring Park. Just don't expect facilities - bring a torch if you want to peer into the depths.
