Prestbury Hill Butterfly Reserve

A steep climb up chalky grassland rewards you with something genuinely special - one of the Cotswolds' best butterfly spotting sites. Prestbury Hill, just outside Cheltenham, is a working butterfly reserve where the scrubby slopes come alive with marbled whites, chalkhill blues and common blues throughout summer.

The walk itself isn't long but it's properly steep in places, so decent boots matter. Once up top, the views across the Severn Vale are excellent, and you can see why the butterflies love it here - all that warm chalk and wildflowers. Early mornings in July and August are peak time; visit midday and you'll see far fewer. The reserve operates on a conservation basis, so it's free to explore, though the access can be a bit rough underfoot.

Families with younger kids might find the uphill slog frustrating for the payoff, but proper nature enthusiasts will spend hours here. Photography types especially get excited about it. Allow an hour for the walk and viewing if you're keen; half that if you're just passing through.

If you're staying at Winchcombe Camping & Caravanning Club nearby, this makes a cracking morning outing before the day gets too hot. The reserve works well alongside a broader Cotswolds walk - combine it with a stroll around Cheltenham's Regency architecture, and you've got a decent day sorted. Bring binoculars if you've got them.
