Prestatyn Roman Site

The Roman fort at Prestatyn isn't exactly a dramatic ruin - what you're standing on is largely buried, which takes some getting used to. But that's precisely what makes it interesting if you're willing to use your imagination. This was a proper military installation from around AD 77, guarding the northern edge of Roman Wales, and the earthworks are still visible if you know where to look.

You'll find interpretive boards scattered across the site explaining the layout - where the barracks stood, the headquarters building, the defensive ditches. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick snap for Instagram. The views across the Vale of Clwyd are decent enough, and Rhyl is only a few miles south if you need civilization afterward.

Historically minded adults and older kids will get the most from this. Younger children might find it a bit abstract - there's no reconstructed buildings or hands-on stuff, just the bones of what was here two thousand years ago. Give yourself an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're really into Roman Britain.
