Prestatyn Castle

The ruins of Prestatyn Castle sit on a low hill just outside Rhyl, easy to spot from the main road but somehow most visitors miss them entirely. What you get is fundamentally modest - a few crumbling stone walls, the remnants of what was once a proper medieval stronghold built to keep the Welsh in check during Edward I's conquest campaigns. It's a short walk from the car park, nothing strenuous, and you can be round the site in twenty minutes if you're not lingering.

Historically minded visitors will find something worthwhile here. The castle was built around 1282 as part of that massive fortification push across North Wales, and even in ruins you can read the layout - the motte-and-bailey structure still makes sense on the ground. The views across the vale towards Rhyl aren't spectacular, but they're pleasant enough on a clear day.

Honestly though, if you're staying at Golden Sands Holiday Park or anywhere nearby, don't make it a special trip. It's the sort of place to swing by en route to somewhere else - Conwy Castle proper is genuinely worth your time, and that's less than thirty minutes north. Children will find Prestatyn dull after the initial clamber. What works best is treating it as a quick leg-stretch stop, especially if you're interested in the medieval military strategy of the Edwardian conquest. Free to visit, no facilities on site. Best in late afternoon when the light hits the stones properly.
