Powfoot Golf Club

The links course at Powfoot sits right on the Solway Firth, about three miles south of Annan, and it's a proper test of golf if you respect what the Scottish coast throws at you. Eighteen holes winding through rough coastal terrain with views across to England - on a clear day you'll see right over to the Lake District hills. The course demands accuracy rather than length, which suits most club golfers fine. The rough is genuine rough, not the manicured kind, and the wind off the firth can turn a decent shot into a wild one without warning.

This is squarely for golfers, obviously. Non-players won't find much to do here, though the setting alone makes the walk around worth it if you're staying nearby. Allow a full day if you're playing - four to four and a half hours depending on the pace ahead. The clubhouse is functional rather than fancy, which feels right for a links course.

If you're based at Queensberry Bay Holiday Park - just a short walk away - or West Moss-Side Livery & Campsite, you could slot a round in easily alongside days exploring the wider Dumfries & Galloway area. Hoddom Castle Caravan Park is a touch further out but still within reach for an afternoon game. Check their website for membership rates and visitor green fees before you travel, and ring ahead in winter as coastal courses can shut for weather or maintenance. It's not a destination course in itself, but for golfers on a holiday park break, it's genuinely convenient and the course itself won't disappoint.
