Powfoot Bowling Green Pavilion

The bowling green pavilion at Powfoot sits right on the Solway Firth, a proper windswept spot where the Scottish coast meets the water. It's not your typical nature reserve - this is a working community space, but the location draws walkers and birdwatchers who come for the mudflats and salt marshes that stretch out beyond. The pavilion itself offers shelter and views across the firth, and it's genuinely quiet. Most visitors seem to be locals using the bowling green itself, which means you get peace rather than crowds. The real appeal is the birds. Waders feed on those mudflats at low tide, and if you're patient with binoculars, you'll spot curlew, redshank, and oystercatcher. You won't need more than an hour here unless you're serious about birding, but it fits perfectly as a morning stop if you're based at Queensberry Bay or one of the other caravan parks near Annan. The walk up from the car park is gentle enough for families, though there's not much for young children once you arrive unless they're into spotting wildlife.
