Powelles Grove Copse

The trees here are absolutely towering - proper ancient woodland that makes you feel properly small. Powelles Grove Copse sits just outside Alresford and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, which is exactly when a wood feels most rewarding.

It's a straightforward walk through mixed woodland with enough paths to keep you from feeling hemmed in. The canopy is thick enough that even on muggy days you get decent shade, and in autumn the floor becomes a carpet of beech leaves that's almost too perfect to step on. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - this is just trees, quiet, and whatever wildlife decides to show itself.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those who don't need interpretation boards or a cafe at the end. Families with young kids should be fine for an hour or so, though there's limited "attractions" within the wood itself - it's not a destination attraction so much as a proper breathing space. Bring a dog and it becomes infinitely better.

Free to access and open whenever you fancy it. If you're staying at The Spinney or Woodlands Camping nearby, it's close enough for a morning ramble before breakfast. Don't go expecting dramatic views or rare birds - what you're after is the simple pleasure of being under a proper old wood canopy where the air feels different. On that front, it absolutely delivers.
