Poverty Hill

The name alone makes you smile - Poverty Hill doesn't exactly sell itself on its moniker. But this modest peak above Barnoldswick rewards the short walk with proper views across the Lancashire moorland, especially on clearer days when you can clock the Pennine ridgeline stretching away eastward.

It's not a serious fell walk by any measure. We're talking a straightforward ramble from Barnoldswick itself, taking maybe an hour return depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The terrain is fairly open moorland - grass, bracken, the occasional squelch underfoot if it's been wet. Good boots help more than they're strictly necessary.

Histor types might get something from the industrial heritage scattered round Barnoldswick itself, though Poverty Hill itself is more about the walk than any specific landmark on the summit. Families with school-age kids will find it manageable without being thrilling - it's the sort of outing that works well paired with other things in the area rather than a standalone pilgrimage.
