Poulton transforms into something genuinely special come December. The Christmas Festival takes over the town centre with proper festive spirit - market stalls, carol singers, and that specific type of chaos that only happens when a Lancashire town decides to do Christmas properly.

It's the sort of thing that works best if you've got kids in tow or you're after some old-school yuletide atmosphere without the Disney-fied polish. The stallholders tend to be local traders rather than the same chain vendors you'll find everywhere else, which means you might actually stumble across something worth buying rather than another light-up reindeer.

Poulton sits just inland from Blackpool, so it makes sense as a day out if you're staying at Rawcliffe Hall or Wilson House - both are within easy striking distance. Neither of those parks screams "Christmas destination" on their own, so adding the festival into your plans is wise thinking.

Timing matters. Go on a weekend when it's properly busy and you'll catch the atmosphere, but expect crowds and limited parking. Weekday mornings are far more pleasant if you can swing it. The whole thing usually runs through to Boxing Day or early January depending on the year, so there's flexibility.

Free to wander around and soak it in, though you'll obviously be spending on food, drink, and whatever trinkets catch your eye. Allow a couple of hours max - it's not enormous, and once you've done a loop of the stalls and grabbed a mulled wine, you've got the measure of it.
