Postlebury Wood

Just outside Warminster, Postlebury Wood is one of those places you'll stumble upon by accident rather than plan for - which is precisely why it's worth the detour. It's a proper working woodland, not a manicured country estate, so you get genuine forest rather than the theme-park version. The trees run thick enough that even on busy days it feels properly quiet.

You can walk here without worrying about paying an entrance fee. There's something liberating about that. The paths wind through mixed woodland - ancient oaks mixed with younger growth - and it's the sort of place where you notice things. Bluebells in spring. Decent bird life. The occasional patch of open ground where you remember what the sky looks like.

It works best for walkers rather than small children looking for a playground. Give yourself an hour minimum, longer if you're actually trying to see something rather than just moving through. The terrain's uneven in places, so waterproof boots make sense, especially after rain.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Center Parcs Longleat Forest is six miles away and sprawling, while The Treehouses or Hidden Wood Glamping offer something more intimate if you want to stay closer to actual woodland. Longleat itself is five-odd miles south, so you could easily combine this quieter walk with the safari park's chaos if that's your speed.

It's not spectacular. But it's real, it's free, and it's a genuine break from the usual tourist route.
