Posbury Camp

There's not much left of Posbury Camp, if we're being honest. This Iron Age fort sits on high ground near Exeter, and what you get is mainly earthworks - the ghost of ancient ramparts that once ringed a settlement. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity rather than spectacle.

Walking the site, you trace the defensive ditches and banks that protected whoever lived here around 2,000 years ago. The views across Devon countryside are genuinely good, and that's often why people make the trip - the panorama matters more than the archaeology itself. On a clear day it's proper worth it. Muddy underfoot most of the year, so decent boots aren't optional.

Family groups will find it bite-sized. Kids who dig history will get something from spotting the ramparts; younger children might lose interest after thirty minutes unless you spin them a tale about Iron Age warriors. It's free and open to wander whenever you fancy.

As a park holiday addition near Exeter, it works well. Sunsets & Marshmallows Glamping sits just 2.7 miles away, and Barley Meadow Touring Park is five miles off. Both make decent bases if you're exploring the area. Pair Posbury Camp with a walk around Exeter itself - the city's got proper Roman remains if you want something more substantial - or use it as a breather between longer hikes. Don't expect car park facilities or visitor infrastructure. It's you, the fields, and a lot of Devon history nobody talks about.
