Portland Basin Museum

The Portland Basin Museum sits right where the Potteries and Peak Forest canals meet in Ashton-under-Lyne, just outside Macclesfield. It's an industrial heritage museum housed in a converted stable block, and it tells the story of this corner of Lancashire through textiles, pottery, and canal life. You'll find yourself wandering through galleries packed with proper working-class history - looms, kilns, domestic objects that paint a picture of how people actually lived here.

The canal setting is part of the appeal. After you've looked round inside, you can walk the towpath, watch the narrowboats, maybe sit by the water. It's a bit of a mixed bag, truth be told. The museum itself is small enough to do in an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're keen on industrial stuff. Kids will get something out of it, especially if they're old enough to understand textiles or pottery-making, but younger children might find it a touch dry.

Best visited on a weekday if you can manage it - fewer school groups clogging up the narrow galleries. It's free, which is always welcome, and open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm. If you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park just five miles away, it makes for an easy afternoon detour. Pair it with a proper walk along the canal towpath and you've got a decent half-day sorted. The museum doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's genuinely informative and the setting's atmospheric.
