Porthwell Covert

The woodland at Porthwell Covert is proper quiet - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birds instead of your own breathing echoing back at you. It's a small forest patch on Anglesey, near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, and it works brilliantly as a half-hour detour if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Anglesey Holiday Pods or Coed Helen.

What you get is straightforward: woodland paths, a bit of peace, and the chance to stretch your legs without committing to a full ramble. It's not dramatic or trying too hard - just accessible forest walking through decent tree cover. Families with young kids will manage it fine; older walkers looking for views or a proper challenge will probably move on fairly quickly.

Go early or late in the day if you can. You'll have the place to yourself and the light's better. There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so come prepared - bring water, wear decent shoes, and don't expect facilities. Free access and no time limit, which is how it should be.

The real value here is timing. If you're camped nearby and need a gentle woodland walk before breakfast or after the kids have had enough of the beach, Porthwell does the job. It won't be the highlight of your Anglesey trip, but it's a proper use of an hour and beats sitting around the caravan site.
