Portaferry Windmill

The windmill at Portaferry is a proper bit of industrial archaeology - a squat, solid tower that's been grinding grain since the 18th century. What you're looking at is one of the few surviving examples from that era in this part of Northern Ireland, and it tells you something about how this corner of County Down actually worked when Belfast was just starting to boom. The tower itself is built from local stone and catches the light beautifully on a clear day, especially from the water side.

You can walk right up to it and peer at the structure - the mechanism is long gone, but you get a real sense of the craftsmanship involved. It's not a grand visitor attraction with tea rooms and gift shops. There's no formal entrance fee that I could establish, and it doesn't demand hours of your time. Thirty minutes tops, unless you're the kind of person who sketches old buildings or gets properly lost in local history. That's exactly why it works.

Downpatrick is just a few miles away, which puts you well within striking distance of the caravan parks dotted around the Lecale Peninsula. Castle Ward is closest at less than two miles, making this an easy leg-stretch destination if you're based at one of the sites. Delamont Country Park, five miles south, is better for a full day out with the family, but Portaferry Windmill is the sort of place you'll find yourself popping back to once you've discovered it. It rewards a second look.
