Portaferry Marina

The marina at Portaferry sits right at the mouth of Strangford Lough, where the water narrows into a proper working harbour. Fishing boats bob alongside pleasure craft, and it's genuinely the sort of place where you can watch actual life happen - deliveries being made, locals popping down for a pint at one of the waterfront pubs, the occasional seal cruising past. There's no entry fee and no set opening hours because it's not an attraction in the traditional sense; you just turn up.

Walkers and photographers will find themselves coming back here repeatedly. The views across the lough shift constantly with the light, and you can easily spend an hour or two sitting on the quay watching the tidal movements. It's particularly good at dusk when the water turns copper-coloured and the fishing fleet heads out. Bird enthusiasts should keep binoculars handy - the lough is a major stopping point for migrating birds, especially in autumn.

If you're based at Castle Ward Caravan Park or Silverbay nearby, Portaferry marina makes an excellent afternoon wander before heading to Downpatrick for dinner. The village itself is charming without trying too hard, with a few decent eateries and enough local character to feel authentic rather than touristy. Families with young children might find twenty minutes enough; older kids who care about boats or wildlife could happily spend longer. Allow thirty to forty minutes if you're making a proper outing of it, longer if you're the sort who likes to sit and read by water.
