Pondtail Shaw

A proper woodland walk just outside Crawley, Pondtail Shaw is the sort of place you find yourself in almost by accident - dense trees, quiet paths, and the kind of green that actually feels restorative after too long on the M23. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, which means it's genuinely peaceful but also means your boots will need a wash afterwards.

It's best suited to walkers who like low-key woodland rather than dramatic views. There are no facilities, no cafes, no grand vistas - just trees doing what trees do. An hour gets you a proper wander; two hours if you're the type who stops to identify fungi. The forest is free to access and open year-round, though winter can be muddy and summer brings out the flies.

If you're camped at Sunset Tree or Sands Farm nearby, it's absolutely worth a morning sortie before heading elsewhere. The surrounding area - within spitting distance of Gatwick - isn't remotely wild, so Pondtail Shaw becomes genuinely valuable as a pocket of actual woodland. Don't expect anything to happen here. That's precisely the point. Come for the trees, the quiet, and the reminder that green spaces still exist five minutes from the airport.
