Pond Garden

Just east of Royston, Pond Garden is a modest but genuine nature reserve where locals come to spot dragonflies and the odd kingfisher if you're lucky enough. It's the sort of place that reveals itself slowly - you won't find headline views or dramatic landscapes, but rather a series of small ponds linked by paths where the wildlife actually lives rather than poses for visitors.

The reserve works best for patient types. Birdwatchers will recognise it immediately. Families with young children often find it pleasant for a half-hour wander, though there's not enough going on to keep them engaged for three hours. The paths are manageable and fairly flat, which is the main draw for casual walkers who want something between a quick stroll and a proper hike.

What you're paying for, essentially, is quiet. The ponds themselves are unremarkable - grey and functional - but the reason you visit is to catch the wildlife that depends on them. Bring binoculars and a bird identification book. Spring and early summer are genuinely the best times, when breeding birds are active and dragonflies are on the wing.

If you're staying at Hidden Gem Glamping four-and-a-half miles away, Pond Garden makes a decent morning activity before heading elsewhere. It slots into a wider Essex nature trip quite comfortably - you're not going out of your way much, but it's not a headline attraction either. Honest assessment: worth an hour if you enjoy that sort of thing, less essential if you don't.
